The integrated supply chain driving aerospace excellence in Italy
Campania is one of the leading aerospace hubs in Italy and Europe, with a century-old tradition in the aeronautical sector and a complete, innovative supply chain. Over recent decades, Campania’s aeronautical sector has grown rapidly thanks to Leonardo’s international collaborations, in particular with Boeing and Airbus for the production of new civil aircraft. The Region also hosts other major leading companies such as MBDA, G.E. Avio, Magnaghi Aeronautica, Tecnam and Geven, along with a network of highly specialised, technology-intensive firms.
The long-standing aeronautical tradition of the Campania Region is further enriched by the presence, since 1960, of the Italian Air Force Academy in Pozzuoli and the Non-Commissioned Officers School of the Air Force in Caserta. Over time, this environment has contributed to the growth of technical and professional skills across the territory.
Within this ecosystem operates the Italian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA), the main national hub dedicated to aerospace research, which has been able to develop within a context of skills already geared towards the technological innovation of the sector.
Collaboration between research centres, universities and companies is also fostered by the Campania Aerospace Technology District (DAC), which fuels cross-cutting development and synergies.
These are complemented by other leading research and innovation centres, including the IMAST District (Engineering of Polymeric Materials, Composites and Structures), the Microgravity Advanced Research & Support Center (MARS) and the Institute for Microelectronics and Microsystems (IMM) of the CNR.
